Hey Lady, Why is Your Blog So Boring?
You may have noticed, I don’t really get down with lots of splashy colors, super interesting graphics, or the general concept of “bold” design.
Do you wonder if I’m not great with computers? Maybe I really don't know what the fudge I am doing and am just not interested in learning...
To that I say: yes, no, and a BIG honking NO!
I’ll be honest with you - I am not the most computer savvy gal on the block.
Sad, but true. I’ll do my best to hide my shame.
Anything beyond basic computer skills is outside my sphere of excellence. I do what I have to do to make things work for myself and my business in our modern world, but I’m not spending my free time perusing graphic and web design platforms or honing those skills. I’m not the copywriter for you if you want someone to implement the copy - Shudders in Luddite - strictly a words and idea woman over here.
I like to think I know what I’m doing. Feeling competent is a key motivator and I strive to achieve a basic level of skill in everything that is important to me. I feel confident in my ability to present myself and my work in this space in the way that suits me best.
Finally, me not interested in learning??!! Pshaw! I actually just had to go learn how to spell “pshaw,” so there I am proving my own point. Many Youtube tutorials were watched while I created this lovely website and blog, and a ridiculous amount of research occurred.
Even though it wasn’t my ideal way to spend a few days, I’m proud that I did it, and I’m happy with the way that things turned out. Learning new stuff is actually one of my favorite things about copywriting (so much to learn, all of the time!), so the idea that I don’t want to learn is ludicrous. Again, pshaw!
Which brings us to the question at hand...why does my website look like a newspaper?
Honestly, it was a conscious choice, both from a design perspective and an intellectual one.
In the online arena, especially in the marketing realm, MORE is the name of the game in so many ways, for so many reasons.
At my core, I am an introverted, highly-sensitive minimalist who struggles with overwhelm.
This combination makes me an amazing copywriter, as I am able to really put myself in your customer’s headspace and literally feel what they feel. It makes it easy for me to come up with multiple creative ways to reach out to them. When you combine that with my research skills, you get truly amazing copy that speaks to the deepest needs and desires of your target audience. Pretty great, right?!
Well, it is pretty great (trust me!), but I can’t do it if that last little section of my mini-USP up there gets in the way…
Overwhelm.
Ugh!! The big, annoying, EVERYTHING IS TOO MUCH feeling that sometimes sends me off to take a cozy hammock break with a book and a cuppa for an hour when I planned to be writing.
And you know what, I have absolutely NO guilt for doing this - it is what I need to do and the best use of my time in that moment. You can’t force the magic to happen, and trying to leads to poorly written copy that doesn’t connect (or convert).
Overwhelm can sneak in from lots of places. Personally, I find looking at lots of visual stimuli - especially from graphic heavy sites with tons of colors and ads, dynamic banners, pop-ups, etc. - is a sure fire way to push me to the edge.
I figure if what I am writing in this space resonates with you, that you may have a bit in common with me, and I do not want to overwhelm you with lots of punchy graphics and moving parts.
This little corner of the web is a place where we can focus on the words, because they are so important (of course I feel this way - I’m a copywriter!). I want the experience of being here and spending time with me and my writing to feel like a small break from the hustle and bustle of what you experience in the rest of your world.
While it may seem “boring” to some, the choice to have this space be minimalist was made intentionally, and I am happy with that decision.
Will it always remain the same? Probably not.
Are you going to see huge flashing banner ads up here someday trying to sell you camping equipment and new cars. Yeah, that’s a negative Ghostrider.
This space is a place to connect - where I can offer valuable insights and ideas to you. From my experience, authentic words and an occasional picture are the best way to do that.
So, I hope you enjoy the boring, and keep coming back for more. Goodness knows I’m having a lot of fun writing here for us both.
